Pete Seeger passed away yesterday at the age of 94. That’s a good age for any man – especially one who lived life as fully and completely as Seeger. We don’t get enough Pete Seegers in the world. Perhaps some day we’ll deserve them. Perhaps some day we won’t need them. But we’ll always want them.
I grew up with Seeger’s music. My Mom had a great collection of 78’s of Seeger and The Weavers and they were great to listen to and sing along with and Seeger’s solo songs on the banjo were always a treat. Later, as I grew older and allegedly wiser, I got to know and appreciate Seeger for his social activism and always admired his honesty and integrity. His legacy – from Woody Guthrie through time to Arlo and beyond to Bruce and still sailing out for generations to come – will continue to shape us all as human beings. If we listen.
And the songs. Oh man – those songs and that voice like a beam of light – that will stick inside me for the rest of my days.
Thank you Pete.
